The State of Georgia last week passed a highway-funding bill that killed its $5,000 income-tax credit for buying an electric vehicle. Last month, Illinois suspended its $4,000 rebate. And now California and Washington are considering limits on incentives to plug-in cars that cost less $35,000.
The Georgia tax credit will no longer be effective as of July 1. The income-tax credits had covered up to 20 percent of the cost of an electric car up to $5,000. That’s gone, just as Georgia adds a $200 registration fee for battery-electric vehicles.
