Odds have it that he will engage fully as CEO at SpaceX and pursue Mars.
I reposted the article at Stocktwits and posed the question of how much will Tesla Motors be worth by 2018 or 2019, after the Model 3 release. Here's a comment from @brocket

Why is Musk leaving Tesla after the Model 3? Well, for one, splitting time between various endeavors just isn't scalable. But more importantly, the recent Elon Musk biography paints a real clear picture of Musk’s first love and larger aspiration: providing regular access to space. The big enchilada.
Musk wants to lower the cost of launches to the point that it becomes economical and practical to fly thousands upon thousands of supply trips to Mars and start a colony. Musk wants to conquer the solar system, and, as it stands, there’s just one company where you can work if that sort of quest gets you out of bed in the morning. *****************************
