Throughout 2015, Cadillac trotted out its forthcoming CT6 plug-in hybrid sedan at major car shows, including last month’s Los Angeles Auto Show. Cadillac used the spotlight of auto shows to highlight how a conventional gas-powered model like the CT6 can come with a plug-in option. That’s a major shift for Cadillac—and the industry—away from building iconic dedicated electric vehicles to gain notoriety as a legitimate player in the EV space.
“We need to walk away from a dedicated model,” said Cadillac marketing chief Uwe Ellinghaus to Car and Driver last month. “I think [plugging in] will end up where all-wheel drive is today. Buyers that want it will tick the box.”
