The Volkswagen Tiguan GTE Active concept made its debut at this year’s North American International Auto Show, running through this weekend. The Active concept brings a sporty, off-road sensibility to the Tiguan GTE plug-in hybrid that VW first showed off last year in Europe. The concept also pushes the boundaries of how plug-in cars are expected to look.
The Active Concept has all-terrain tires, a heavy-duty aluminum roof-rack outfitted with LED spotlights, and several tweaks to front fascia that give the SUV an unmistakably rugged styling rarely seen on a vehicle powered via a plug as well as the pump. Adding substance to these styling cues, the GTE offers the VW’s 4Motion all-wheel-drive system to propel the car in tough terrains that the current generation of small battery-powered cars might not be able to handle.
